Why Big Day In is important…

People around the world have plenty of largely untapped know-how in their skills, knowledge, motivation and experience that is valuable in building communities. People are human capital and human capital builds social capital. Social capital is the network or relationships in place that help a group or community or business to function effectively.

Unfortunately, sometimes a lack of finances is a barrier to bettering human and social capital in its many forms. This can be particularly so in a business sense. However, sharing or exchanging know-how for shared advantage or gain known as reciprocity is valued by Big Day In.

Each participant also offers their time, effort and attention into each activity in exchange for others’ know-how as an alternative to exchanging money for that know-how. These exchanges mean that hosting or being part of a Big Day In is not primarily driven by finances. Indeed, community events should largely be free to host and participate. Then the focus and priority remains purely on developing human and social capital through the concepts developed around socialising education and exploring alternative ways of achieving success.

Valuing the uniqueness of each individual and what they bring to the table is important in bringing people together to increase social connectedness and cohesion.

And that is what is important!
