Big Day In ®

Social education for everyone.

Big Day In is an innovative method for facilitating transformative learning.

Life is an adventure. Choose yours.

Hello!

It’s great to meet you here.

Big Day In began evolving way back in 2009 as a way of intelligently bringing people together in the space between socialising and education. Existing social occasions like a dinner party or a barbeque with friends were pleasant enough but can become predictable conversations that often go nowhere. And so much of education as learning in a more formal sense was often curriculum- or results-driven. There had to be a better way… a way to socialise and educate.

Be safe. Have fun. Learn more. Feel good.

Also, the internet had brought the world into our homes and bringing with it new possibilities of exotic locations to visit and great adventures to experience. Yoga in Arizona? Lunch in Italy? Relax in the Riviera? An impossible dream? No. Impractical perhaps. How to achieve the dream?  Is it more about the experience rather than the location? How do we get what we want with what we already have?

Rethink.

Redefine obstacles as opportunities. Recognise and appreciate who we are and what we have already. Appreciate our gifts and talent. Right here and now. That’s being resourceful!

Ideas and planning began…

Why not get-together in the beautiful location where we already live and tap into the things we are already passionate about, utilise the knowledge and education that we already have, and do activities that we can enjoy. If we share the responsibility for bringing it all together, it will work out and be good for everyone.

Make the dream possible.

The music festival, Big Day Out, where people have outrageous fun outdoors was on at the time. Well, for us, we made it Big, we had a Day of fun, but we were mainly Indoors. So Big Day In was born. Of course, these days, it’s still Big, Day is an arbitrary time-frame, and In better reflects the personal growth and learning that is possible.

So Big Day In can be in or outdoors.

The natural world is part of every one of us as is our inner being. So finding creative ways to connect people with each other on this earth and recognising our kindred spirit is important in creating authentic human connections.

So Big Day can be about the outer and the inner world.

In 2019, the passion for going global with Big Day In, developed primarily as a community (ad)venture that is also applicable in education and business, was reignited with the support of the people and resources from both the Women in Rural, Remote, Regional Enterprises (WiRE) Program at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia and the regional entrepreneurial development hub Canvas Coworking Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. Their support has helped action our ideas into reality around creating opportunities for people to develop their unique strengths and find their true purpose in reaching their life potential through helping others do the same.

So Big Day In adventures Inc. was born and the hosting guide was created so that many people could have the opportunity to host their own Big Day In with a little guidance and encouragement. The hosting guide was digitised so that it can be accessed by anyone around the world who interested in helping others. Contact us for your copy. We also plan for more formal fun and education opportunities based around Big Day In for those who are interested in achieving nationally recognised accreditation. Watch this space! Our aim is to promote and foster personal and community growth and development to sustainably increase human and social capital and capacity worldwide.

Life’s great adventures begin within!

The year 2020 brought about its own challenges for everyone around the world. Even more than ever, it is important to take action and do whatever we can to keep intelligently, socially, spiritually, ecologically connected.

We believe that Big Day In is a way to do just that.

Readjust. Reconnect.

Now, more than ever, people need to be connected both with themselves and others. With the support of Queensland Regional Rural Remote Women (QRRRWN) and the National Rural Women’s Coalition (NRWC), we have been able to continue the work in developing Big Day In for communities.

In 2023, we have become a a small, big-hearted team of dedicated people who are passionate about the benefits of learning with others and having fun while doing so. Our next step into 2024 is to integrate what we know and do into the online world and create a valued online space so that we can all do well together in the world.

We believe in making the most of what you have in life and to find ways to create amazing places and people. We prefer to view people as one small albeit important part of the greater living system that is our interconnected world. We pay our respects and acknowledge the knowledge and wisdom of our global ancestors and human connections to land, water, fire, air, and spirit. We support and encourage current and future global leaders.  We share values such as integrity, respect, compassion, and stewardship.

What do you value in yourself, in others, in life?

We are here to help you and others to be the best version of yourselves to better understand and connect people and grow strong communities in our diverse world.

Listening. Speaking. Holding the space.

All for the greater good.

Life is full of adventures, best shared.

About our Logo

Our Big Day In logo of five coloured, layered circles is interpretive. Initially, it was designed to represent Big Day In as a model of socio-education pedagogy where the host (purple), session leader (orange), and participant (green) come together in the shared space (white) with what they bring from their environment (grey). We now realise that Big Day In is so much more than that. As you will see throughout the website, the logo has been utilised in different ways to reflect the shared nature, equalising effect, or transformative growth that has emerged from people’s experiences of Big Day In.

Networking

Cherie said networking is essential for business and takes practice to achieve success.  She taught us through role-play, ways to develop instant rapport and connection with colleagues and clients. This would be a perfect activity for Big Day In. At my next business meetup, I smiled and made eye contact with a new group of potential clients and I was instantly included. Thank you, Cherie. Flower art

I went to a flower-arranging workshop with my daughter. It was fun and I was hooked! So when we talked about Big Day In, I was excited that I could share what I learnt about flower art. We could get flowers and greenery from my friend's garden, people bring pots. I take everyone through the steps I knew and voila everyone would create just the best displays. I was chuffed with the thought that I could help others create. ELLA

Building Teams

I am a professional facilitator. I hosted a Big Day In for corporate team building. It was a challenge for me to step back and allow the participants to be totally in control of their sessions, without judging their performance to be good or bad, and just breathe and enjoy the experience of being a participant. I learnt a lot about them and I surprisingly learnt a lot about me too. GENEVIEVE

Dad Jokes

Big Day In is for blokes too. Justin was at a bit of a loss as to what he might do in a session. Then he said, "Aha, I have it!" One of his favourite things to do was to tell Dad jokes, funny ones were good but the best ones were when his kids would say "Oh, Dad". That response was what he loved the most. So he brought along his best Dad jokes and everyone took to the floor and shared either his jokes or their own. Everyone had a great time. It sure was a fun session. STEVE

Horses

I ride horses. None of my friends do. I knew that. So in my session I chose to (safely) introduce my horse to my friends. It was funny. Duke, my horse snorted just as my friend Kate came to give him a pat. "Holy moly" Kate said "That was the scariest thing I have ever done.", and then congratulated herself with "How brave am I?!" She still talks about her time with Duke to this day. ANNA

Yoga

My friend Josie is a scientist... and Josie also loves yoga. She loves it so much that she began her training to be a yoga teacher. So at our Big Day In she led us through a session of yoga. I had never done yoga before. I enjoyed it so much, I do yoga now, I love it, and am seriously thinking about being a yoga teacher someday soon. CARMEL

Reflect

One of the strengths of hosting a Big Day In is that each event finishes with a Reflective session. I believe that reflection is necessary on the path of true transformational learning. It just is... How it's done is each person's choice - short or long, straightforward or creative, together or as individuals. Such freedom in the session is another strength of the pedagogy that I agree with when considering how I could grow corporate organisations. MARGIE

Time for Tea

How delightful!

We had our own tea tasting ceremony. And in the loveliest tea set ever. We tasted six different teas, complete with cleansing the palate with water in-between. We wrote down a word to describe each tea and gave them a rating. Then we ranked them for our favourite. It was interesting that no two people ranked the teas in the same order, and there were more than three favourites. JI
